10 Minutes with ... Eskimo Joe.
Multi-platinum album sales, worldwide tours and singalongs in their car — it’s all in a day’s work for Aussie rockers Eskimo Joe. We chat to vocalist and bass player Kav Temperley about their new album, Inshalla
WORDS VANESSA MULQUINEY
Congratulations on the release of Inshalla. How did you decide on the Arabic title and what’s the significance?
It’s a beautiful word I heard being used a lot when I was in Egypt. What I love about it is it means a resignation to fate, which really described where we were at spiritually and physically on this album.
What was your inspiration for Inshalla? Do you feel you’ve gone back to your roots?
With all our records I just write about what’s going on for myself and the rest of the guys as a group. Before, we decided to dress that up as this dark excursion into the night, although at the base of it all they were real stories. However with Inshalla, it’s like the morning light has broken and everybody’s blinking at the glorious day.
How was making Inshalla a different type of experience?
For starters, we worked with one of our producing heroes Gil Norton; he recorded all the Pixies albums, plus The Colour and the Shape by the Foo Fighters, to name a few. In the past we’ve produced most of our own albums, so getting used to working with another person in the studio was interesting. But we had lots of laughs, so the whole process went really well.
Do you go through any rituals when you release an album?
We always say we’ll never do it, but then we get drunk and sit around in a car listening to the record telling each other what geniuses we are… idiots.
What’s your proudest achievement as a group so far?
Just staying together for over 10 years and still managing to have a lot of laughs.
What is the best and worst part of being in a rock group?
It’s such a fulfilling and fantastic job, but you don’t get a lot of sleep and you don’t get to see your friends and family much. But who am I kidding? It rocks!
Where do you like to go on holiday?
I go on holiday to my back porch, but I’m not sure if Jetstar is flying there yet...
What’s next for Eskimo Joe?
Big Australian tours, international tours and world domination.
Eskimo Joe tours Australia from 29 July in Wollongong to 3 September in Launceston.
