WORDS LUKE CLARK

What’s the main difference between driving in Formula One and A1 Grand Prix races?
The feeling is different. With A1, you’re driving for your country. But in terms of racing, it’s pretty similar.

What happened with the accidental pit stop in the A1 race in Malaysia?
I heard what I thought was my engineer. So I went in, but it was too early. Team Great Britain was calling Danny Watts, and I heard their radio. It happens, but it was a shame, as we could have finished on the podium.

Was your recent first win a turning point?
Netherlands was the first A1GP win in my career, and to win in a new Ferrari-powered car was a great feeling. I’m really trying my best to win the title.

Has the driving been more enjoyable?
This year’s car is much more advanced, and I’m enjoying driving it more. There’s more power, and much better tyres. And the carbon brakes are just mega — you can brake very quickly.

Do you feel more pressure as lead driver?
There’s pressure for sure, but it’s a good pressure that motivates me to perform. We need that sometimes.

Are you excited about the Jakarta race?
I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a fantastic atmosphere. It will be tough too, because it’s a first time. Everyone is starting from scratch.

What Malaysian dish do you miss most?
Nasi lemak (rice cooked with coconut milk). You can find Malaysian food in the UK [Fauzy’s home base] — but it’s not the same as in Kuala Lumpur.

Catch the A1GP live on Star Sports, 8 February. The race starts at 4pm, Singapore time.
