WORDS ANNE LOH
Congratulations on your album The Way the World Looks. How does it feel to go from Australian Idol 2008 winner to major recording artist?
Very exciting. I’m honoured to be able to release another album in this forever changing and difficult industry. There was a time when I thought my time was up and I wouldn’t fi nd the money or have the opportunity to go back into the studio ever again. I’m very proud of this album, I feel like this time I got it right.
You’ve included work from your past. How have you grown as a songwriter?
I’ve grown up, but my thoughts and feelings captured in songs are like little diaries I’ve kept, a place in time, so when I hear them back I relate to them sometimes even more. All my songs are like old friends.
What are your influences on this album?
Most of the time it’s my subconscious. As long as it means something to me, and I think John Lennon would approve, then I convince myself I’m on the right track.
You’re touring for 27 days, which venues are you looking forward to playing?
I’m looking forward to touring in general, meeting new faces and seeing new territory. But I grew up in Adelaide, so Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide will be a lot of fun. I hope to meet everyone after the show too!
Where should we catch live bands in Adelaide and what’s a must-do?
The Grace Emily is a good venue to catch everything from folkies to rock ’n’ roll. I recommend a wine tour through the Barossa — that’s always fun! I love to go Adelaide for shows these days.
What are you listening to right now?
I really like Tame Impala, a new band from Perth. I listen to a lot of old school stuff, and John Lennon of course. My favourite band is from Adelaide — The Former Child Stars.
What else is on your plate this year?
I want to be able to write a film score soon, then there’s touring, and this record is obviously the priority at the moment. I’m looking forward to whatever it is the universe has in store.
Wes Carr is performing in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, the Whitsunday Coast, Rockhampton and the Sunshine Coast from 27 May–12 July.
