Fiji 1 Holiday 3 Ways

Explore three different holidays on the Pacific island nation — for families, couples and adventure lovers

Fiji 1 Holiday 3 Ways

If the idea of a sunlounger-bound holiday bores you to tears, Fiji is well prepared for you. Surfers will feel the pull of the 6m waves at Cloudbreak near Tavarua Island. Some resorts, such as Castaway Island, offer daily boat trips to Cloudbreak so surfers can holiday with non-waxhead family members and be satisfied they won't be missed.

But if you want to be as close to the action as you can, Tavarua Island Resort is the place to be - it hosted the Volcom Fiji Pro in June this year. As well as Cloudbreak you'll have access to top-notch reef and beach breaks for all abilities - from the frighteningly named Desperations to Kiddieland, where you can take your L-plated grommits.

Fiji's beaches often overshadow its adventure-packed inland rivers, but sustainable-tourism operator Rivers Fiji wants to change that perception. As well as offering day trips with sea kayaking off Beqa Island, the company organises two- and six-day river tours. The Highlands to Islands Ultimate Fiji Explorer package includes accommodation in Pacific Harbour and class II-III whitewater, with kayaking on Luva River, rafting the Upper Navua Gorge, sea kayaking, snorkelling and ziplining.

If money is no object - say you're on honeymoon, celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary or wanting the ultimate wedding location - Likuliku Lagoon Resort in the Mamanuca archipelago is the top pick for a romantic getaway. It's the only resort in Fiji with over-water bures (thatched huts). There are 45 bures all up (those not over water are lined along the beachfront). All are in traditional thatched hut style, but with a nightly turn-down service.

For those over a certain age, Turtle Island is the ultimate Fijian resort as it was the backdrop for Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins' cavorting in the movie The Blue Lagoon. But it's good for all romantics because it is an all-inclusive island resort that caters to just 14 couples at a time. It has 14 private beaches too - that's one each!

If you're a guy looking to impress your lady with a special gift, nothing says "Fiji" like South Sea pearls. J. Hunter Pearls, a company that works with the local community, has its showroom on Naverea Road in Savusavu Town on Vanua Levu island, not far from the pearl farm.

You can't get much closer to the source than that. The jewellery is also available in the gift shops of resorts such as the Westin, Sofitel, Outrigger and Sheraton resorts, as well as in Nadi airport's duty-free store.

Fijians love children, which makes this group of South Pacific islands an ideal family holiday destination.

Most Fijian resorts have meimeis (nannies) on hand to look after children from six months through to 12 years old.

Plantation Island is one such resort - its famous Coconut Club offers kids a parent-free respite with canoe racing, longboat rides, water polo, crab hunting, frog races, fish feeding and beach games such as sandcastle building.

A five-star option is Outrigger on the Lagoon, which is located on the Coral Coast at Viti Levu. Meimeis here will teach your children basic Fijian language skills and traditional fishing techniques, arts and crafts. Culture-based entertainment, such as fire walking, will thrill young ones too.

Viti Levu is also home to Kula Eco Park, where endemic wildlife can be seen in its natural environment. The flora of this coastal forest is beautiful and lush, and can be explored along wooden walkways, while the fauna is strange (iguanas and other prehistoric-looking reptiles) and colourful (butterflies, parrots and native doves). The park's captive breeding program is trying to protect Fiji's endangered species.
