In the Skies with... Ivan Choong.
A photojournalist who founded I-NSC Asia Pacific (Singapore), a diving photography business, shares his favourite getaway
Sea slugs and nudibranches are bread and butter to Ivan Choong, who has spent much of his career underwater, forging a reputation for high-quality sub-aquatic shots. For his holidays he prefers returning to dry land – as well as taking to the air. He tells us why Kota Kinabalu ticks all the boxes as a relaxing, scenic destination.
What’s your ideal holiday?
A long, free-and-easy holiday travelling and exploring the islands and inner villages of Asia.
What’s a favourite destination you’ve been to with Jetstar Asia?
I would have to say Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.
Tell us about the interesting things you’ve done in Kota Kinabalu.
Get to know the people, you never know who might have access to ‘hidden treasures’ away from the regular tourist spots, and they just might be happy to show them to you. I’ve seen waterfalls, great views and historic sites that I would never have stumbled across by myself. It’s also a must to sample the local food and wines.
What was the most memorable moment on your recent Kota Kinabalu trip?
Bringing back a piece of history/ culture through an impromptu decision in getting a traditional motif tattoo.
Could you see yourself living in Kota Kinabalu?
Yes. It has a slower pace of life compared to Singapore and large areas to explore. It would be a fantastic place to live in. Furthermore, it’s much closer to the famous island of Sipadan, where I regularly dive.
Do you have any advice for those wishing to travel there?
Spend more time travelling outside the town of Kota Kinabalu, hook up with experienced local guides to visit some of the ‘not so promoted’ areas. Try the local food and their rice wine – Lihing.
What do you want to do on your next Kota Kinabalu trip?
Sky-dive, parafly or fly a plane and shoot some of the scenic sights. And definitely try more local food.
